n8n, Make and Zapier seem interchangeable, but choose the wrong one and you pay thousands of euros too much or get stuck the moment you want to scale. This is the honest comparison for Belgian SMEs: which automation tool suits your volume, budget and technical level?
If you are looking for a tool to automate workflows, you will quickly encounter three names: Zapier, Make (formerly Integromat) and n8n. Each has its own strengths, pricing model and ideal use case. The wrong choice can cost you a lot of money or technical frustration later.
Zapier: the easiest, the most expensive
Zapier is the market leader and the most user-friendly tool. No code required, easy drag-and-drop interface, thousands of app integrations. But: Zapier is by far the most expensive if you process many tasks. At 10,000+ tasks per month you quickly end up on plans of $500+ per month.
- Suitable for: simple automations, small volume, non-technical teams
- Not suitable for: complex logic, high volume, custom integrations
- Price: free up to 100 tasks/month, then quickly expensive
Make: the flexible middle ground
Make offers more flexibility than Zapier at a lower price. The visual scenario editor is more powerful but has a steeper learning curve. Make is ideal for medium-complexity automations with moderate volumes.
- Suitable for: medium complexity, good price/performance ratio
- Not suitable for: very complex custom logic, on-premise requirements
- Price: free up to 1,000 operations/month, then from €9/month
n8n: powerful, open source, technical
n8n is open source and can be self-hosted. This means no per-task pricing: you pay a fixed cost for the server (or use the cloud version). n8n is the most powerful of the three but requires more technical knowledge to set up and maintain.
- Suitable for: complex automations, high volume, technical teams, custom integrations
- Not suitable for: organisations without any technical resource
- Price: free self-hosted, cloud from €20/month for unlimited executions
Which tool is right for your SME?
Our recommendation for most Belgian SMEs: start with Make for medium complexity or n8n if you want to scale without exploding costs. Zapier only if you need a very quick start and the volume remains limited.
